Scoutmaster’s Report:

  • The Lock-in was very successful. The boys had fun, and visiting Webelos enjoyed the activities with our scouts.
  • Will’s Eagle Court of Honor was well attended.
  • The winter camp out was cancelled due to severe cold and ice—may check on another camp with cabins….will check on rescheduling.
  • Matt’s Eagle Board of Review will be March 1st.
  • March 11th will be Adam’s Eagle Court of Honor.
  • Chris’s Eagle Court of Honor will be in April.  Date not yet firm.  Possibly 4/14?
  • Mr. Snowden will present Friends of Scouting information to at 8:45 p.m. on 3/15.  Mr. Ryan will post info on the website and Mrs. Kourtz will call new scout parents to welcome them to this gathering, etc.
  • Hats off to Collin, Graham, and Kevin for their efforts in recruiting Webelos in the Patriot District.
  • At the last scout meeting we could not get into the shed due to the ice and snow.  The SPL had planned on using materials that were in the shed for the last meeting activity.  He did a good job being flexible, and was able to come up with a different activity very quickly.
  • It is important that people are appropriately trained to be able to lead camping trips, etc.
    Key training opportunities include:
    April 18--New Leader Essentials
March 17 or May 12--Boy Scout (Specific) Training
    April 28--Outdoor Essential Training

Treasurer’s Report:

  • Assets $4,685.83 checking account balance for Troop and Crew.
    $382.52 Crew, 4303.31 Troop.
  • Mr. Wyatt put $500.00 deposit for Rodney on his credit card.  Reimbursement is needed.  He is still accepting Rodney applications.
  • Thank you to Mr. Wyatt, who is the incoming treasurer.
  • Mr. Kazimer, Mr. Sharp, and Mr. Wyatt have signature authority on the Bank of America checking account.
  • Mr. Cardenas, Mr. Gaulke, Mr. Kazimer, and Mr. Wyatt will work on a spending plan/budget during the next meeting in the back room.

Advancement Report/Training:

  • Michael is next Eagle candidate.  Project is complete, is getting book together…needs four months of leadership.
  • Philip is getting applications and book together.
  • Andrew shared first Eagle project proposal.
  • Anthony showed Mr. Smith the first draft of his Rosary Walk.
  • Ryan has a goal to complete his Eagle Requirements before his senior year.
  • OA Elections will be within the next month or so.  One adult needs to be nominated by the scout committee, too.  The criteria for adult(s) are similar to the scout criteria…15 days of camping, etc.
  • Thank you to Mr. Ryan for handling the Advancement and registration database (Troopmaster.)
  • Mr. Ryan will follow up on Mr. Flynn’s paperwork to make sure he is registered to Troop 697, and not another troop.
  • We need a training strategy to get the 45 adults trained.  Also need to have the Youth Protection online training updated.

Eagle Report:  see notes above

Merit Badge Coordinator:

  • Seven scouts who were working on the Aviation merit badge went to the Air and Space Museum near Dulles.  The group had a wonderful docent who spent 2 hours and 15 minutes with the scouts. Mr. Beach taught this merit badge.
  • Mr. Cardenas will make sure the merit badge counselor list is up to date.
  • Mr. Ryan will get a manual at the new Scout Shop that reviews merit badge teaching requirements, etc
  • Mr. Gaulke is willing to lead a forestry merit badge based camping/outing in April or May in George Washington Park.

Activity Coordinator

  • Mr. Sherburne researched the Elizabeth Furnace to see if it is available for the March camp out…it is not.  It is expected that the March camp out will be at Pohick…Mr. Burke will coordinate camping details with Mr. Dolan.
  • April 28th Camporee.  That is the same weekend as St. Mary’s 8th grade confirmation.  This may impact the number of scouts and adults able to participate in the Camporee.

Equipment Chairman:

  • No Report

Charter Organization Representative (COR):

  • It was stressed, again, that we need to have BSA trained adults going on all campouts.  To be a BSA trained adult they need to take New Leader Essentials and Outdoor Training.
  • It is appropriate to have one Knight on each Eagle Board of Review.
  • The K of C will audit Troop 697’s books.
  • The Knights enjoy having a scout report at their meetings.

Old Business:

  • Mr. Gaulke reported that the Class B T-shirts have been distributed.
  • Scout Sunday went well; 35-45 scouts went to the front of the church on Scout Sunday.  Fr. Barkett challenged each scout to recruit a friend into their troop.  He also encouraged scouts to earn their religious emblems.

The meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
